View Full Version : Material changes in exterior wall

We have an exterior wall that is presently a stacked wall with block on bottom, stucco on top. Now we want to change parts of the stucco wall so that we have (instead of the stucco) prefinished metal bonded to plywood. The intent is that this material only goes between window frames. At the top of the window, we want a 2x8 finished exposed wood band, then there will be stucco above.

So...

Do we change the stucco wall that is currently part of a stacked wall into a compound wall and replace the stucco with plywood/aluminum for the portion of the wall section between the bottom of the window and the top of the window.

Do we sweep the 2x8 on the compound wall, basic stucco wall or stacked wall?

We've already created all the stacked walls, so now it is a matter of figuring out the best way to apply the metal panel between the windows and the wood sweep above the windows without causing undo horror in our sections and elevations.

I did try and "overright" my stucco in a plan detail to show the plywood, but can't get the stucco to disappear so that I can create a reveal between panel and window frame.

Help is always appreciated!

I would use the compound wall approach on the stucco subwall and split it - as you said- for the window heights.

In general compound walls are good if the finish varies, but the different surfaces are still aligned. You could use stacked wall even in those cases, but they are a lot heavier than compound walls.

If you want to show varying wall widths you could either use stacked wall type, or add a sweep in the type. Both add complexity to computations, so again if your 2x8 wood band is flush with the surface, I'd just modify the layers to show this material.
