Layer Prefixes & Layer drop down

I am trying to implement a new layering standard.
The requirement will be to have a 1 or 2 letter prefix a dash or underscore then the entity intent e.g. wall then the entity discription e.g. hatch.

I am concerned that this will cripple the layer drop down function of being able to shortcut to the Wall layer by typing W.

How have other users gotten around this.

I use the Properties palette the same way. The only difference is you can type more than one letter. e.g. for C-Anno-Bldg-Elev, select the layer fly-out in the properties palette and start to type c-anno-... and it will scroll through the list one letter at a time.
