View Full Version : 8.0 corrupting files?? Find the Fix here!

I have been working on a project for the entire morning, saved it , and then a little later reopened it to find that it was corrupt and crashing out Revit.
So I sent it off to Autodesk for investigation, and decided in the meantime to work on some 7.0 - 8.0 family upgrades. Only now to find that the families are becoming corrupt and can't be opened too, so I have sent them off to Autodesk as well.
Are others experiencing a similar problem? I am using the new web install 20050423_2300.
I have attached a problem file, can someone please try and open it to see if it's just me.

That file appears to be corrupt.
It won't open in the CD build 20050412_2300.

I have been playing around and I can now consistently reproduce the corruption results, but I think because my findings relates to the beta I believe it can't discuss it any further (NDA). Beta testers be careful.
I'll let Autodesk test my findings and let them get back to the forums with their results.
I just had the same problem. I saved my work then tried to open it. It wouldn't open. Crash! I would advise anyone contemplating working in the latest 8.0 to stop right now.

I've been working in the 8.0 CD build since it arrived yesterday, without a problem.

I've just tested, and it's only happening with the latest web build. The CD build seems to be working fine.
I started this file with the Revit Beta, so that is probably the source of my problem. All the work I did today is currently unaccessible. Plus I cannot go back and work on any of the older files, as when I save them they will be corrupted as well. I am shutting down the drafting factory and laying off all the workers.;-) I am confident Revit support will have me up and running soon.

Files started in beta and opened in the CD build are fine, the problem may be the web build as Chad has noted.

Not sounding too promosing, i'm glad i'm still using the CD build. Of which we've found very successful. Files are operating as well if not smoother and faster in 8.
A lot smoother transition than the first few builds of revit 7...

I downloaded the Web build this afternoon (no beta intervention), opened a v7 drawing, worked on it a little and saved it down. I just reopened it and everything looks fine.

I have had the same problem with the web build. However, I turned on Open GL when I installed 8.0. (Had it off with the beta.) After I turned Open GL back off, problem went away for now. May be a coincidence.
I don't have the CD version yet.

I found, after working today on a file I'm ready to produce CD's on, the file is no longer accessible.
I receive an "unrecoverable error" when I attempt to open the file, and then the program shuts down.
Web build here, also, I'm one of those that suffer from the missing F1 syndrome.
I suspect that perhaps we may have been bumped from the server before the whole download
could complete, and that might be part of the issue???
I will report to support and post back.
Working with web download build 20050423_2300.
Have no problems with new files or Bata files opening or saving.
Plus the F1 can be fixed with this.
"You do not need to download the entire new build to get the missing files – you can go to the following page :"

I don't know if I experience the same problem but after installing the new release 8.0 REvit wasn't able to open 2 out of 3 of my actual projects telling me with a message ("the file must be manually upgraded") or crashing...
Any toughts?

opened a family (that was updated from 7.0 to the latest beta release) in the current web build: no problem, saved it.
Then try to load it in a project - unrecovrrvvzavble error....
Try to open the file - idem
Chad did you get an update from the factory?
Gonna send my files in now
Same here. Web build only, trying to open previous B8 and crashes everytime. Reinstalled to no avail.

Sorry Factory...
This issue sounds serious enough for me to shelve the CD when it arrives! :shock:

I think the following workaround might help:
any time you open a file saved in Preview Beta, Save it under a new name. I believe the resulting file should open just fine.

this should not be affecting v7 files, only files saves in Preview Beta. See my previous post about the workaround - save as a new file.
Sorry for the inconvenience. we are looking into this.

I wish I had known this before I opened my file and saved it yesterday. I wouldn't have had to lay off all the drafters in the factory downstairs. They're all over at Tim Horton's now getting riled up on coffee and donuts.
:rolleyes:

hopefully you still have backup files - you can use them to recover at least the previous version (before you made any changes in the latest 8.0).

I uninstalled the preview beta prior to installing the web release. I reinstalled it. Now I get the same message in the preview beta.
Please help. I am locked out of my current project workflow...
Thanks,

You are right. I went back to the previous days backup file, opened it and did a save as. I hesitate to redo all my work until I hear from support. If they manage to resurrect my file it would be great.
By the way, has anyone else noticed that a residue of this whole process is a backup directory with 4 empty .dat files?
eperms.dat
requests.dat
users.dat
wperms.dat
Looks like some kind of workset issue. ( The file in question did not have worksets enabled).

I think the safest bet is to reinstall the web release, find the backup version of the file the opens, and save it under a new name. then you will be all set.
I was able to Save as one of the bu files. However, it only let me do it to the earliest one so I lost five hours worth of work and have to now try and figure out what I did or did not change. So heres to another couple of hours of down time. At least my file opens.
FYI , reinstalling the web release does nothing to solve the problem.

it won't recover files that are already corrupt :-(. you need to open the last backup that originates from Preview Beta, then save it under a new name.

Could one of the moderators sticky this thread for a while?

we now have a reliable way of fixing these corrupted files, if they don't have worksets enabled. please contact support http://www.autodesk.com/supportrequest if you need them fixed.
if you have a corrupt file of this sort that has worksets, your best bet is going back to a previous backup:
* File -> Workset Backups
* pick the appropriate backup folder
* OK
* this brings up a dialog with a list of versions to choose from
* pick the last version that was saved in Preview Beta
* "Save Version As..."
* specify a new path...
* then open the extracted file and Save As New central or local file (under a new name, not back to itself!)
Again, sorry for the inconvenience.

Interesting.....
I've used the Beta version since it was released and then downloaded the official release.
No problems encountered whatever.

Factory really took care of me on this issue. They did everything they could in a very short time, repaired my file, and got me going.
Thanks Ilya, and a really big thanks to Tatjana D. and the crew.
Cheers!

How did all you people get your files fixed before me? :? I was the first to put mine in. Only just got mine back today.
Anyway, definitely better late than never, big thanks to the Revit team.
