I am trying to create a cone shaped roof (well actually 1/2 a roof) on the end of a small residential project.
Does this style of roof shape have to be an in place family?

Steve,
Go to the help menu then select tutorials and then find a tutorial on creating in place families. Take a look at the creating a dome roof tutorial.
That one sure helped me.
Hope that helps,
Steve, I could not find the tutorial that rodneyf mentioned, but I hope disecting the attached file helps. Also have a look under "revolutions propeties" you can set the start and end angle so that you would not have to construct a void.
The model reminded me of holidays in the bush...

Carl,
In 5.1 you can find the tutorial under Autodesk Revit 5.1 Tutorials then under The Family Editor then select Create In-Place Family. In 6.0 go to the Help menu then select Tutorials on the tree on the left select the + sign next to Creating Families then select the + sign to the other Creating Families then select the + sign next to Creating In-Place Families then select the Creating the Dome Roof In-Place Family.
Hope that Helps,

It's jut me, but if it is residential project, I would do it like this example. It is basically a standard roof I made by rotating a line in 5 degree increments and then connecting the ends to create a 72-gon of slope defining lines. This way, it will still schedule, and you will likely build it this way anyway, if it is framed.
