temp dimensions and wall locking

I am having a hard time getting a temporary dimension to appear so I can change the wall length in Floor plan view level 1. Every dimension appears except the one I want. The same thing goes for locking the walls. What are the basic rules for wall locks.?

Only temp. dimensions to the nearest objects will be given. To modify the location of a temp dimension, use the square grip and drag it to the correct location.

Only permanent dimensions can be used for locking walls. So you'll need to first change the temp. to a permanent dim. or create one.

Also you don't change the length of a connected wall directly. You move the wall connected at the end of the wall you want to lengthen.

Only if the wall is unconnected will selecting it show the temp. dim. for the length.
