Adding a background colour to fill patterns would enhance detailing in Revit.
For example, a brick could be detailed with a black brickwork hatch and a red wash as the background - see attached image....
The brick detail component has been constructed using multiple fill patterns to obtain the hatch lines....

I can certainly see that it would be useful, but you are aware that you can achieve the same effect by overlaying transparent colored fills and pushing the patterns forward and back.
Beegee, is your sample a wall section? I have placed a transparent fill pattern on a wall section and it hides everything behind it.

How common are color printers these days? Or are you mostly thinking of communicating on screen?
Colour printers are quite common these days. However, most of my work is for permits and such so I use colour infrequently. It is nice to be able to produce colour images for presentations, but I'm not sure how sophisticated Revit needs to be in that regard. I can always use Corel Draw if Revit won't do what I want.

No, its a drafted detail. As you've found you can't get a solid transparent fill to allow the model to show through.

Leonid,
I use colour printing all the time, it is an easy way of highlighting the different types of structure. At smaller scales, say 1:100 / 1:200 it shows a lot clearer than just plain hatching and is also a very useful presentation tool.
Also along the same lines I had a project of 29 Units done 100% in Revit which I then had to give to the Landscape Architects to add their planting, etc. Apparently they do all that in Coreldraw. Once they had completed their details I had to bring it all back into our drawings, minus the notes, details, etc. I then found that bringing the coloured fills from Coreldraw not as easy as it may have been.
It would be good if we could do that sort of coloured, transparent, gradient fills on any part of the model or drafting details and have the ability to move it backwards or forwards to hide or be hidden.

Paul

We have started to use color in construction documents and use it extensively when trying to coordinate MEPFP systems with structure. For design, we use color in all our output.
It would be extremely helpful to have the ability to have both a hatch pattern and a color fill available in cut patterns in walls, detailing, etc. Thanks.
BTW, great product. Revit Rocks!

It is nice to have workarounds for most of our problems but this only shows that we have many clever people in this forum... I need to have a nice application, with many features and not simply good advice for all of you clever people...
I am very sorry to react this way, we are all very happy to solve our problems with your help but sometimes it is better to say "Revit doesn't do this" or "Revit should do that" instead of inventing things.
I hear workarounds for site tools, pads, rails, sweeps, ramps, floors, roofs, modeling, sloped walls, curtain walls, details, etc... So, let's turn our problems into wishlist items. Everyone can add something to the wishlist.
