I'm working on a temple addition which will have a number of domes like "This" one. I managed to create "That" using sweep tool but I am getting "But" inside. Also, I couldn't find a way to close the dome short of capping it with another form.
Any ideas appreciated.

I haven't investigated this, however what comes to mind looking at the images is to work with a combination of solids (the sweeps) and voids (perhaps revolved inside the form?)

Maybe start with a revolved solid and use swept voids to "carve" it?

Just a couple of ideas - I hope that helps.

Last resort - do you have access to any nurbs programs (form z, rhino, etc.)? You could model it outside of Revit and import it.

Hi Alek,

Christopher is on the right track. You create a rovlved mass object but you can sketch out your domed profile in section that way eliminated the need to carve voids.

In "This", it looks like the actual dome will be closed with another form. So isn't that what you are going to do anyways?

Totally off the cuff, you might try creating one of the segments as a family using the family editor then bring that family in as a component and array it around the center point. I think that will give you the control you may be looking for.

What is the final thickness of the dome? Does the finished dome follow the contour of the outside of the dome, or is it a smoothe curved dome the final finished interior? If you can hide the undesired overlap by building a smoothe dome inside, maybe that will work. But I don't know the interior form.

As Jim suggested, I would build it as a family, especially if you have many of them. Otherwise you will have to rebuild it a number of times. It may even turn out to be a nested family, create one of the ribs, totally parametric(as needed), then load it into a structural family and polar array it as req'd. I would work that way, then if you change the design you can just reload the family.
