I'm not sure of a thread, but if you search for WAN of VPN you'll find some discussions. Currently there is no acceptable way to accomplish long distance working. Due to the amount of time and network issues that arrise when saving to central, there typically isn't the bandwidth to handle working on a central file from remote locations.

There's been some discussion here that you may find by searching on VPNs.

What you are likely to discover is that as a multi-part team you will want to work with worksets and that saving and loading from central will be a slow process, depending on the speed of your links to the internet. If you can carve things up so that someone works on the bespoke families, surrounding buildings (if you have need of urban modelling) or the site so that people in different locations are working on different files not local versions of worksets then you will find some benefit in that I imagine.

If you all need to work on the model then sit down and think hard about how you are going to do it. Element borrowing is too slow to be feasible but checking out of worksets is manageable with some control, but do bear in mind that if your colleague slopes off for a long lunch an administrator wont be able to unlock his/her machine and check the workset you desparately need back in.
