I don't know if this is the correct Forum for this question, but I suppose it will depend on the anser....

I want to make a wood beam with some parametric dimensions that will be placed at different heights inside and out of a building. I don't want it to necessarily be a structural beam and I don't want it as a mass because I have massing turned off to enable other objects to view properly....

What would be the best way to create this?

I would use a Genreic Model and load it has a component

Is it something you want to see as part of the model or something you just need to see in wall or building sections? If the latter, you can just make a 2D Detail Component...

This is something I need to see in a model (exterior perspective and interior perspective).

Just load this profile, model a sweep, use this loaded profile, model it as an in-place component, make it a group and copy it around. Or model a sweep in a *.rfa, load this profile there. You should be all set
