What about extensive training on Familes. Mech and Electrical Symbols, with or without annotation, parametric element creation (windows, doors, columns, etc)

When I first began to work with Revit, I printed the entire Tutorial series, and kept all three 3 ring binders on my desk beside my computer for months. (I still remember referring to them going - Now where was how to insert a door into the storefront). If you haven't worked all the tutorials yet, it really does payoff to take time and work at least one session per day until you work them all.

Family creation itself is very straight forward. If you are familiar with AutoCAD, then it is similar to creating "Acad drawing blocks", with families that can be 2 or 3D. That said,
creating parametric families is another issue. For this you really need to understand reference planes, reference lines, locking to these lines and planes and the control issues and problems you can cause yourself getting tied up in creating the most flexible must-flex-to-solve-all-issues parametric family any Reviteer has ever seen.

Work the tutorials, (which include family creation), and post your questions. As you struggle with the learning curve, you'll find very understanding ears on this forum as we have all struggled through this experience, and usually some constructive answers.

Good luck.
