View Full Version : Revit 6 - network paths

The network path buttons are broken!

Under the Settings -> Options -> File Locations menu, the three browse buttons do not work consistently. The default template file button works as expected, opening a browse window that is able to see mapped network drives.

The other browse buttons, (Default path for user files, Default path for family templates, and the Library paths) open a different, simpler window that DOES NOT SHOW mapped network drives. Network paths are still visible as //server/share UNC-style paths further down the list, AS LONG AS the shares are Windows shares. Shares from alternate OSes, such as Netware, MacOSX, Unix or Linux DO NOT SHOW UP AT ALL. This is incorrect behaviour, as these drives are mapped normally for every other application, including Revit’s standard File -> Open dialog box. It is reasonable to expect that the mapped drives should show up as their correct mapped drive letters.

Manual editing of the Revit.ini file is one way we have found to work around this bug. This is NOT a good solution for the standard user who may not know the subtleties of network path nomenclature. A second solution is to type in the correct UNC network path directly in the type-in boxes in the file locations dialog. Again, you need to know the exact UNC network path, which is something that the majority of users are unlikely to know. Thirdly, the correct mapped path can be entered manually. This is probably the easiest solution, but not the most obvious.

Wesley

s'pose this really shoulkd be in the bugs section anyway - there are some answers in the post, so I'll leave it in both places. A mod can chuck this one if they like.
Cheers,

If you begin by typing your drive letter in the path box, it will connect properly.

yep, that works, thanks!
'course, someone, somewhere, has to know that that will do the job .... Which is important for us as we do alot of installation and implementation work.
Thanks,
Wes

This is in Known Issues (http://www.zoogdesign.com/forums/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=1930) too, Aaron posted it a little while back...typing the letter fix let's you browse the share and finish the path.

I too use the Revit.ini file as a "master", configure an install once and place a copy in a fresh install, everything works the first run. I do this for the Revit.ini, Keyboardshortcuts.txt (mine is courtesy of one Wesley Benn...still waiting for the 6.0 version sir)

We've had the same problem with network drives. I trust this has been added to the "bugs" section for repair. This type of work-around is way beyond a typical architect.

It's posted and they know...

It's not too hard Steve, heck you've forgotten more about architecture than this little bit will tax you :D When you click on the button to map the file location...first type the drive letter in the box to the left of the button...easy. Check it out, it will take you 2 parsecs...

Adding the 'Mapped folder' with Drive letter to 'My networkplaces' in Windows XP will resolve it. It can be browsed easily now from 'File location' browse for the folder.

Steve,

I totally agree it not too hard (for me), but it is a bit beyond some of the architect's that work for me. My hope is that Revit focuses on the non-technically inclined - which I believe are most architects. In that way, it will take over the AEC market.
