Has anyone else noticed that the temporary dimensions seem to not show up ALOT in R8 ? and with no active dim option?
Has something changed and I missed the memo?

Yes, I've noticed this too. Most of the time the "activate dimensions" button has been available, but several times it hasn't been. Haven't figured out the rhyme or reason for why it occurs when it does.

Came across this (http://forums.augi.com/showthread.php?t=21201&highlight=dimension+line) thread from a few weeks ago - Patricks was having the same issue.
Seems like only three people are having this issue. Anyone else know if this is a bug (maybe fixed in the most recent builds?) or the circumstances that lead to it?

yeah I still have that problem sometimes... soo frustrating to have to pull a dimension string just so that I can activate the dimension to get something in the right place. It's even worse when it won't even let me activate the dimension I just placed after selecting the object that the dimension is referencing, and so I have to draw a couple of drafting lines, one of the dimension I want, to get the thing in the right place.

This thread makes me smile, early users of revit complained for many releases that the temporary dimensions were all over the place and too confusing, I guess now they've been over simplified.

I finally realized with arrayed dims(the qty value) you don't have to click on the number, you can right click on the array, and select edit text and change the value there instead of zooming out and trying to click the box that is miles away from your drawing.

oooo... good one.
I have noticed that since V7 that the temporary dims have not been there in a lot of instances. Thought I was going crazy.

That is a weird and wonderful tip Scott - that will save me some zoom time!

See my posts in these two threads for an explanation of why you need to choose activate dimensions: http://forums.augi.com/showthread.php?t=22909, http://forums.augi.com/showthread.php?t=37686
