spot elevations

I am having trouble placing spot elevations in a foundation plan. The only elevation that I am able to place are the t.o. footing heights. As I hover over the 'wall' the cant place symbol shows up.
Any recommendations?

Make sure your view range allow you to see the top of the wall in the view, else you cannot place the spot elevation symbol.

Thanks beegee, very helpful.
I also have a plan region created in the drawing. Setting the view range to be able to see tops, tagging all elevations and then setting the view range back to the level I desired work really well.
