i searched some of the forums- but there was 497 results- i got overwhelmed- sorry that i may be posting the same question.
i have a regular dwg w/ and x-ref, and of course i don't want certian layers on so i froze them. however, every time i open the dwg, all the layers are back on. :banghead: its really frustrating to say the least to have to freeze all the layers again. i've never had this problem b/4. i know i can use the layer state manager, but i know that don't have too. does anyone know why it won't keep the layers frozen? i'm using acad map 2k5
thanks

Try the setting "Visretain".
that didn't work, i even did it 2ce just to make sure- i set it to 0, and closed out the dwg. then opened it- same result- everything on. then i set it to 1, and closed out the dwg. and same result. thanks tho. any other ideas?

Is your VISRETAIN set to 1?

Try setting it to 1 and then making some changes then close and open. Setting it to 0 would have lost any changes you had already made.

Setting it to 0 would have lost any changes you had already made.that's what i did, i set it to 1, made changes, saved and opened it up again- same result, but i tried it a second time- that seemed to work- maybe i did something wrong the first time-

i really don't understand what is going on- can cad get "tired"? that what seems to happen- the layers will stay off one time, but not the next. and the reason why i say "tired" is b/c i was working in paperspace, freezing layers not needed for that plan, when some of the frozen layers from the xref started comig thru- it was odd, only part of a line would show, but several parts of lines- so i closed the dwg for fear of a fatel error and when i brought it back up, all the stinking layers were back on- UAGH!! and my visretain is set to <1>.
ideas?????

I konw this post was a very long time ago, but if I see an unresolved problem I'm looking for, I know others with this problem will come across this as well, so I'll go ahead and post the reply...
Open the drawing you're inserting (the X-refed file) and set visretain to = 1, this will tell AutoCAD to use the layer properties within this drawing.
Open the drawing your inserting the x-ref into and set the visretain to = 0, this will tell autoCAD to use the layer properties of the x-refed file. Please see below:
VISRETAIN - Controls the visibility, color, linetype, lineweight, and plot styles (if PSTYLEPOLICY is set to 0) of xref-dependent layers and specifies whether nested xref path changes are saved.
0 The layer table, as stored in the reference drawing (xref) takes precedence. Changes made to xref-dependent layers in the current drawing are valid in the current session only and are not saved with the drawing. When the current drawing is reopened, the layer table is reloaded from the reference drawing and the current drawing reflects those settings. The layer settings affected are On, Off, Freeze, Thaw, Color, Ltype, LWeight, and PStyle (if PSTYLEPOLICY is set to 0). This setting also specifies that changes made to the paths of nested xrefs are for the current session only and are not saved with the drawing.
1 Xref-dependent layer changes made in the current drawing take precedence. Layer settings are saved with the current drawing's layer table and persist from session to session. Nested xref path changes are saved with the current drawing and persist from session to session.
I hope this helps someone!
