I'm looking to create a .dwg file from a .jpg, .jpeg, .tiff, or .bmp file.

Thanx

If you'll mention what software you're using (regular AutoCAD?) we can move this question to a more appropriate forum where it will get more attention.

For now, you can check out this FAQ on turning drawings into jpgs (http://forums.augi.com/showthread.php?t=16654), which will hopefully answer your question.

All I know to do is attach an image (just like attaching an xref, but type "image")...and you'll have to scale it. All that will give you, though, is a dwg file with an image attached...it won't convert the image to linework.

There may be some utility for converting raster images to vector formats...but I've never looked for or heard of one.

I think he was asking how to do the reverse...change a raster to a vector.

D'oh! I got that backwards didn't I? :banghead:

hold on just oooooone second here... search the forum for raster to vector (http://forums.augi.com/search.php?searchid=233151)and you'll find that there is no easy way to do this. ;)

Please note I have *moved* this thread from the New Forum Users (http://forums.augi.com/forumdisplay.php?f=47) Forum to this one as I believe it would be better served here.

Below snippet is taken from the small print found on the Forum General (http://forums.augi.com/forumdisplay.php?f=44) page ( Click HERE (http://forums.augi.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=28398) to see a screen capture )...

Does the image represent an engineering-type drawing?
How complex is the image?
Are the features dimensioned?

If it's not too complex and it is fairly well dimensioned it will be more efficient to recreate the drawing from scratch. If there are only a couple of dimensions and accuracy is not important, you can attach the image (as already suggested), scale it to match the dimensions that are known and trace over the lines with acad commands.
There are several raster-to-vector programmes ranging over a considerable price range and with various degrees of ability. There is a trial version of Scan2Cad available here (http://www.softcover.com/).
Also, there are bureaux that specialize in raster to vector conversion

I have had limited success with a trial program I downloaded called RasterVect at www.rastervect.com. This may assist you..

Depends on the source. I have had great luck with Illustrator when converting .pdf back into a CAD drawing, but only if it was converted from CAD to .pdf. I hazard that it may do the same with a .tiff or .jpg. I have also used a raster graphics add-on to convert .tiff contours to vector but in each case, you will have to tweak and scale the resulting drawings.

That's not directly comparable.
A pdf created from a dwg file will contain vector info 'cause pdf can contain both vector and raster data.
A pdf created from a raster source will contain raster data just like a bmp, tiff, jpg, etc..

Right. Which is why I have no luck recreating a drawing that was scanned into a .pdf through Illustrator as opposed to directly "printed" to .pdf.
