hi,

could anyone tell me how to access the 17 Line Patterns for use in both Drafting mode and or for other purposes ?
I need to have a range of varying line types for a variety of uses like plan fills, hatched areas ( not using the standard hatch patterns) and can not find how to access the Line Patterns existing / system line types.

I see the Line Patterns listed under the Settings drop down menu, , but they are not available for use in eg : view properties or Settings - Materials -surface pattern ( hatches) or by toolbar selection at any time.
Have managed to import some .pat files from ACAD easy enough, but want to have a useful range plus custom line types.
Find the Revit Help sections no help at all.
thanks in advance

This stuff is fairly fundamental to the way Revit works and you need to get to grips with it to really get the most from the package.

Line types are assigned to different object types in the 'Object Styles' dialog. Hatch patterns are assigned by assigning the patterns to materials as 'surface patterns' or 'cut patterns', materials are then assigned to elements through their properties dialogs, either as system families (walls, stairs etc) in the model or as loadable families in the family editor. You can also paint surfaces as a material using the paint tool to override the specified material.

Using the above options you will get walls to show in a specified thickness when cut, window openings and roof outlines to have nominated thicknesses when seen in elevation and the relevant hatch patterns to show where elements are seen in elevation or section.

If you aren't happy with the above you can override line styles using the linework too and can paint surfaces or mask with a filled region as you find you need to.

Look at the default templates carefully to see how Revit's publishers see these things being best set up.

Thanks Pete.

I use Filled Regions already as a normal part of the job.
Do not mean to insult you, I understand loosely exactly what you are talking about, however...

In Settings - Line Styles, you get the 14 system types, under Settings - Line Patterns you get 17 types, and under Settings - Line Weights you get to choose from the range. OK

In Drafting mode, choosiing Lines, there are only 9 to choose from (Beyond,Centreline, Demolished, Hidden, Overhead. Lines, Medium , Thin and Wide).
I want say to use a closer spaced Overhead line or other dashed type, to identify a wet area floor system on a plan view.
All that is available to me are the 9 basic types from either the Properties dialogue box, or the Tool Bar dialogue box.

I cannot find how to access the Line Patterns to say use a Dash dot dot.
Is this any clearer please ?
cheers

Hi Trombe,

You can create new Line Patterns :_

From the Settings menu, choose Line Patterns.

Click New.

In the Line Pattern Properties dialog box, type a name for the new pattern.

Click in the text box under Type and choose either a dash or a dot from the drop-down menu.

If you selected dash, click in the text box under Value and enter a value. Dots do not require an associated value.

Revit requires that you follow a dash or dot with a space. Choose space in the next Type text box under the one you just defined.

Enter a value for the space in the Value text box.

Repeat Steps 4-7 as desired.

Click OK to exit the Line Pattern Properties dialog box.

The new line pattern is added to the list of available line patterns.

Click OK to exit the Line Patterns dialog box.

Note that each dash and space has an assignable length associated with it and each dot is drawn as 1.5pt long dash.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Having created a line pattern, you can create a new Line Style :-

The Line Styles command creates or modifies line styles. Different line styles appear for different effects, such as a dashed (------) line for reference planes. When you install and run Autodesk Revit, it provides and predefines several line styles. Each predefined line style has a name that describes either the line itself, for example, Dash dot, or where Autodesk Revit uses the line style, for example, aligning lines. Autodesk Revit stores the line styles in the default.rte file.

Creating a Line Style
From the Settings menu, choose Line Styles.

Click New and type a new name for the line style.

The name appears under the Category column in the Line Styles dialog box.

Click in the Line Weight text box to choose a line weight for the line style.

Click in the Line Color text box to choose a line color for the line style. See Setting Colors for more information on defining colors for your Autodesk Revit project.

Click in the Line Pattern text box to choose a line pattern for the line style.

Repeat Steps 2-5 for the desired number of line styles.

Click OK to exit the Line Styles dialog box.

The new line style is stored in the project only.

Hope that helps.

In 6 there is also a repeating component tool that effectively works as a line with additional data attached to it, repeating at different centres. I haven't played with it but with a generic annotation symbol (not tag) you could probably create lines that had the word 'gas' or 'TF' (timber fence) as necessary in a fashion similar to AC

Hi Beegee and Pete.

thanks guys for that . Sorry you had to write that out .
I had done the create new pattern before I asked but could not get it appear...until you pointed out AFTER you create the line pattern you have to create / add it to the Line Styles applet !!!!!
That does make the odd difference !!
Thanks heaps guys.

This is the only remotely close thread I could find on this issue.

I already know how to create line styles & how to load them into the view- but someone in my office has stumbled into a predicament:

When creating a filled region, under the type pull-down, instead of the different line types listed there is a list of all the different drafting views that he has created. When I change the type to a different drafting view that is listed, the filled region will change, as wanted- but there is no way of knowing which line style to choose....:screwy:

Does anyone know how the line styles were overwritten by the drafting views & how to fix?????
