I am a packaging designer using Artios Cad program and wanting to learn AutoCad 2D, 3D. Does anybody have any suggestions how to get started in my training? IE...what schools to attend, are there any online programs that are available? I have a little experience using AutoCad R-14 back in the day but that's it with AutoCad. My goal is to draft or design in 3D. Thanks for your help...

Check your local University or Community College. They should have various courses based on AutoCAD. They teach you how to do 2D (a career standard) and they also teach 3D basics. I know that there are more advanced courses and what not you can take via CAD/CAM companies. Look in your yellow book for them. Or you can also go to an Architectural or Mechanical firm (depending on what KIND of CAD you wanna do) and ask where THEY go to get their training. They might give you some more locally viable and affordable choices.

my take would be to just start using it... maybe take an intro to CAD class at your community college... keep an eye on the ATP courses (http://augi.com/education/default.asp?page=728)here on AUGI which are always free, and join a LUG if there is one near you (http://augi.com/lugs/default.asp?page=119) to keep up on new features and have nearby caddies to ask for advice/help, and of course, post any specific questions you have here on AUGI...

There are A LOT of new things since R14, but, the basics are still the same, I'd guess it's like riding a bicycle... :) good luck, and welcome to AUGI...

Hi Ramsey

Please note that I have moved this thread from the AutoCAD General form to this one. I believe it would be better suited here.

Thx

To find out more about manufacturing software from autodesk (http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/item?siteID=123112&id=5358306&linkID=1073441).

Or check out these forums on AUGI (http://forums.augi.com/forumdisplay.php?f=78)...

Thanks for the reply Mes0945, I have started to use AutoCAD 2006 on my own and am getting ready to sign up for a couple of cad classes at the local comm. college "FCCJ" here in Jax Fl. Any suggestions where I can find a 2006 users guide to help me along? Thanks for any insight you may give me... Ramsey
P.S. Thanks for the warm welcome to AUGI and I have signed up with a local LUG. (that sounds so funny)

ps. Cool! in that case, don't forget to check out the LUG forum (http://forums.augi.com/forumdisplay.php?f=37)then...
lol... I know what you mean about that sounding funny... of course, if you are really a dork like me, you'll just enjoy being able to make plays on words like this... (http://mistressofthedorkness.blogspot.com/2005/07/lookin-for-lugs-in-all-wrong-places.html)

oh, another thing to keep in mind here is the new features workshop... you can select which release you're migrating from, and it will update you on all of the new features since then... there are little demos, etc in there, and I find it is quite a good resource to quickly get you familiar with the new concepts (like tool pallettes, tables, the sheet set manager, dynamic input, etc).
