Internet Explorer 7 To Be XP Only (http://it.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=05/07/23/0244218&from=rss)

WindozeSux writes "The new Microsoft browser, Internet Explorer 7 will only be available for users of Windows XP (http://websearch.about.com/b/a/187001.htm). However, due to the fact the that a large amount of Windows users do not own Windows XP, IE7 is expected to boost the amount of Firefox users (http://news.com.com/Mozilla+IE+7+to+boost+Firefox+growth/2100-1032_3-5794785.html). From the article: 'Improvements in Firefox, along with IE 7 restrictions, could lead to a dramatic increase in the open-source browser's market share, according to Dotzler.'"

I don`t know about anybody else, but I don`t use IE - its too full of holes.
I use Opera - I think its great - allows zooming in on web pages and a lot of other features IE doesn`t have.
I won`t be installing IE7

Thank my lucky stars I actually have windows XP.
I hate it when a computer upgrade is mandatory to run software.

I use Firefox too, but as I understand it, you have to have IE in order for AutoCAD's help system to work. In fact, I had IE 5 on Windoze 2K, but had to upgrade to IE 6 because one service pack or another broke the help system in AutoCAD.

So - will this mean future versions of AutoCAD will effectively be XP only?

They already are "XP only". No tech support is available for any other operating system.

True. At some point, software companies simply have to move forward and let the past go. Why upgrade to ACAD 2006 if you are hesitant to move to XP. Kinda like the post somewhere on AUGI where they had a new state of the art computer running ACAD 12. Flawed Logic. Remember this in economics 101. I have been using Firefox, but it is starting to become flawed just like IE. Opera is better about this, but both programs (FF & O) still have no real solution for rendering pages that are IE only, like some parts of Adesk - like the subscription center. Open the subscription center in FF or O and then in IE and see the difference in functionality. There might be addons to alleviate this, but out of the box, you lose functionality. As long as it is taking to get IE7 out, it would be surprising if it wasn't simply the best thing that ever happened to Microsoft. Surely it is going to be awesome; however, I hope it is not a knock off of MSN Explorer. Cheesy interface.

Really they shouldn't have to. All browsers and web pages should comply with W3C (http://www.w3.org/) standards (which IE & IE only pages obviously don't).

Never a truer word said.

Let all web browsers play on a level playing field...

If only we could persuade Micros**t to stop hi-jacking real standards and tweaking them for their own purposes.

IE7 Bugs and Reviews (http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=05/07/29/1228228&from=rss)

An anonymous reader wrote to mention a Register article in which the possibility is raised of the current build dumping Yahoo and Google toolbars (http://www.theregister.co.uk/2005/07/28/ie7_nukes_rival_search/). At the same time, GWBasic (http://www.andrewrondeau.com/) writes "I've posted a review on IE 7 Beta 1 (http://www.clothedandy.com/Writings/IE%207%20Beta%201/). It is very clear that, unlike when Microsoft targeted Netscape, they are using their classic method of producing superior software by catering to the needs of the user. This is not IE 6 with a few features borrowed from the competition, but rather a clear step in the evolution of user-centric design." Flexbeta (http://www.flexbeta.net/main/articles.php?action=show&id=102&perpage=1&pagenum=1) and ZDNet (http://reviews.zdnet.co.uk/software/internet/0,39024165,39210992,00.htm) have looks at the new browser as well.

Yesterday, rumors were circulating stating that the IE 7 beta 1 release causes the Google and Yahoo! toolbars to vanish. As Dean stated in Scoble’s blog (http://radio.weblogs.com/0001011/2005/07/28.html#a10776), we support Google’s and Yahoo’s (and anyone else’s) toolbar in Beta 1 and will do so in the final release.

Yea but they got their fingers burnt with Java. MS Virtual Java Machine isn't bundled anymore because of legal stuff. You can find it on the net somewhere. Best to download proper java and let the browser use that.
