I have tried and tried and cannot come up with a way to space the posts. It looks like you can only get the corners to show up. Am I missing something?
I would like to space the posts (auto of course) across the length of a railing. Do I have to make the railing in short pieces or can I get the program to do the dirty work?

Using 6.0, ubder Main Pattern, use Spread Pattern to Fit.
Balusters in a pattern are justified along the length of a railing segment. Beginning starts the pattern at the beginning of the railing segment. If the pattern length is not an exact multiple of the railing length, then there is excess space between the last pattern instance and the end of the railing segment. End starts the pattern from the end of the railing segment. If the pattern length is not an exact multiple of the railing length, then there is excess space between the last pattern instance and the beginning of the railing segment. How Revit determines the beginning and end depends on which way you drew the railing, right to left or left to right. Center places the first baluster pattern at the center of the railing segment and any excess space appears evenly at the beginning and end of the railing segment. Spread Pattern to Fit spreads the pattern evenly along the length of the railing segment. No excess space occurs, and the actual placement value of the pattern differs from the value indicated in Pattern Length.

Maybe you already did this, but did you check out the railing tutorials in 6.0: "Creating the Railing Layout" and "Adjusting Railing Parameters"? It takes you through what Beegee is pointing out.

I am not having any problem with the "baluster spacing" but rather the posts the railings are attached to.

"Posts" can only occur at ends and corners of a railing layout. If you want "posts" or some other special support to appear at set intervals along the railing, include them as balusters in your baluster pattern. There you can control spacing etc. You can even supress "Posts" altogether and let the pattern control all.

You can also set the posts to the interval setting, then just split the railing sketch line and a post will appear at each split. That's what I do.
