Can't cut hole in ceiling

I have an elliptical ceiling made and I want to simply cut hexagonal holes in it.

I select the the "openings" from the model menu and don't get any response. I can select cut perpendicular but I cannot select the ceiling.

Tried voids they do not cut either.

Is Revit incapable of cutting ellipses?

This is a flat ceiling with an elliptical shape, correct? If so, just edit the ceiling and draw in the openings in sketch mode.
