I am used to seeing the "abcd.rvt is being saved or opened by someone else" window popping up when more than one person accesses the central file. What I DON'T understand is the 'user.dat' It seems to pop up even when I am the ONLY person accessing the central file...namely when I go to check out an element or workset. Has anyone else seen this? Are there any best practices to minimize it's occurence? Thanks in advance.

Are you saying that you get a message someone else is saving when only you are working on the file? Or are you just seeing a user.dat file being created?

I'm not entirely clear on what the file is for (Factory, do chime in) but it seems that with R8 some new files were added into the backup folders (eperms, requests, users, wperms) to speed up the process of making objects editable. Perhaps the reason you're seeing this is that Revit is getting access to that file to change permissions on parts of the project you're working on.

The message looks identicle to the "abcd.rvt" window. Says it's being opened or saved. Does it work as some sort of local cache to keep track of who owns what?
