" PARTS OF FAMILIES" NOT WANTED IN SECTION VIEW

My problem consists of section views showing all of one family.
I have made my timber support beams in one family. I probably should have spilt it up, however I found it easier to just copy around the support beams. When I look at section view it shows the entire family even if it is not in the cut plan. How could I fix this. I only want to see what is in my cut plan.

Assuming that you are talking about an in-place family, you'll have to split it up.

If any part of the in-place family is in the cut plane, all the objects that make up the family on both sides of the cut plane will display.

Is there any method of spliting it up? Besides re creating each family individually?

I believe, although I have not tried this so it will have to be an experiment, that you can assign different parts of a family to different subcategories and then control the visibility of the parts you don't want to see by turning off that particular subcategory.
Let me know if that works, I am curious...
