First, I am very grateful to have found this forum. Hopefully my questions can be answered.

I am reviewing Revit and Americad's VisionRez for a Custom Home Builder. I am currently using VisonRez for structural design of floor systems - Residential, Mutli-family, Commercial.

VisionRez has the capability of producing a Take-off for the entire building as it has been drawn in the software, thus eliminating the need to send the plans out to a Lumber Co. to do a take-off and bid out.

My question is, does Revit have the same functionality and how user friendly is it, meaning, will it allow me to filter different floors and roof to help the Lumber Co. in shipping and bidding, i.e. First Floor Frame, Second Floor Frame, Roof.

Any information would be helpful. Thanks,

In Revit Building, you can create almost any type of schedule. In the schedule properties dialogue box, you can add a “calculate value”. So for example, you have a stud wall length divided by 16” o.c. This calculated value will give you how many studs you need in that particular wall. You even take this one step further and calculate you sheathing and so on.
The question is, will be as accurate as vision Rez? From what I have read, I don’t think so but this is something I need to look into further. And Yes you can separate this information from level to level.

Actually, it would be if you actually model the framing, as several custom home builders using Revit do (search for 'framing plans' here on Augi, there are some very nice examples). Then you'd be able to generate freming scehdules with all the cut lengths for every stick...

Thanks for the replys. It looks like Revit can create a material list of everything that is applied in the drawing. So you could take-off the rough framing as needed and filter out what you did not want per the schedule data.

As far as the modeling of the framing, it looks like that is a separate function of the program. I am trying to expedite the process, so when you are finished with the design, then you can create a material list for rough framing, windows, gyp, whatever. You can then in return send that out to various vendors to bid, eliminating the middle man (lumber co.'s estimating dept.) while keeping your bids competitive.

I think it can be done in both VisionRez and Revit, jut trying to make a solid easement before purchase.

Thanks again.
