Cannot detach a xref

I was on the phone, not paying attention and x-refed a dwg back into itself, or at least that's what I think I did.
Now I cannot get it to detach. What is up with that?

try detaching it from the other direction...
b.dwg from a.dwg instead of a.dwg from b.dwg
