In the "Create Points" dialog there is a setting for "Default Style", why is that?

Mark,

one example could be if I am going to create some points in use for grading, by setting it to a default style of say "Grading_Points" (with the appropriate settings) my points will come in on the correct layer, with the correct look and feel.

You can set default styles for pretty much all objects in Civil 3D.

Thanks Danny

I was *hoping* that was the case but changing "Default Styles" has zero effect on my installation. In fact with the exception of maybe two or three settings the dialog is totally worthless.

Mark,

It doesn't seem to automatically pick up on the style, which could be a current bug. However, provided the point has a description that coincides with a point group that has a particular Point Style, the Update Points will work.

Because, this is connected to the various COMMANDS one sees listed under
POINTS on the SETTINGS tab of the workspace.
There one can set the default point style that is used when each of the
various point commands are used.

Try going to settings, points, commands, and modify any or all of them to
use either your desired default point style, or a different style per each point
creation command and then test them out.

Thanks but I've tried that as well. If I change the "Default Styles" to a different point, label style for the "CreatePoints" command it does show up as such in the "Create Points" dialog under "Default Styles" but the points when inserted do not honor those styles I selected. *shrug*

I am finding that the only way to get the points to come into the drawing in a different style is to modify the properties of the "All Points" point group to relect the desired style.

Yep!! Same here. *sigh* It would seem a lot of thought was put into programming these dialog boxes only to have them turned into worthless eye candy.

Here are some things I've tried in order to have manually inserted points placed in the dwg using the point style I prefer.

1) Points --> Create Points. Expand the Create Points dialog. Under Default Styles select Point Style and change to prefer point style. Doesn't work!

2) Civil --> Show Civil Toolspace ... . Pick Settings tab, expand Commands. Double click CreatePoints. Under Default Styles change Point Style to preferred style. Doesn't work!!

2) Civil --> Show Civil Toolspace ... . Pick Settings tab. Right click on Point, choose Edit Feature Settings. Under Default Styles change Point Style to preferred style. Doesn't work!!

4) Combine all of the above, doesn't work!!

If any of these work for you I'd really like to pick your brain. *grin*

BTW, here's what the "Help" says.

To edit the Default Style settings
Open the Edit Point Settings dialog box using one of the following methods:
Edit settings for all point-related commands: In Toolspace, on the Settings tab, right-click the Point Edit Feature Settings.
Edit settings for a specific command: In Toolspace, on the Settings tab, expand the Commands collection under the Point collection. Right-click the desired command. Click Edit Command Settings.
If needed, scroll to Default Styles and expand the collection.
To specify a default point style, edit the Point Style setting.
To specify a default point label style, edit the Point Label Style setting.
Click OK.

As I learned in a class provided by (contact for information)
what you will want to do is open the Create Points dialogue, and then Expand that out so you can see the Points Creation parameters, just below Default Layer, therein locate the DISABLE DESCRIPTION KEYS and set that to TRUE, your points will then assume the correct style as desired.
Otherwise C3D is attempting to MATCH the point style to that style as specified by the Description Keys, even IF you don't have any established.
The other application of point styles is best done BY GROUP, as a best practice.

Feel free to Pick My Brain, only I will refer you to the source of my information
and he will be only too happy to assist.

That did it. Thank you very much.

Also you can change "Disable Description Keys" in the point creation dialog then change the default styles of your points.
