hi all,

we just loaded revit on one of our office laptops so one of our architects could work on it off hours. it fails when he tries to launch it with the folllowing message:

"The application failed to inititalize properly (0xc0000005). Click OK to terminate to program."

*we have updated the video drivers to the latest version
*we have tried this with revit 8.0 and 8.1
*windows xp sp2
*dell inspiron 6000

I did a decent amount of google research and found a similar issue occurs with VIZ with some video cards. The fix there was to add an environment variable that would prevent the splash screen from launching. I was not able to find a similar fix for Revit.

Anyone seen this or solved it?

Thanks,
Chris

This sounds like a problem for Autodesk tech support, but...

Have you ever got Revit working on this Laptop before?

Did you try doing an uninstall, remove any left behind folders and files, and then do a clean reinstall?

Are you installing from the CD or the Web? Maybe try the opposite of whatever you're trying (the CD versions are old, there are more recent builds on the web).

Check to make sure OpenGL Hardware Acceleration and Overlay Planes are turned off (they should be by default - but you never know):

Goto where Revit's installed: C:\Program Files\Autodesk Revit Building 8.1\Program

Open up the Revit.ini file using Windows Notepad.

Look halfway down, look for the "UseGraphicsHardware" setting and make sure it's set to "0": UseGraphicsHardware=0

I believe it should be set to 0 by default, but it's worth checking.

Then try starting Revit.

Tough one... good luck!

An update.

We put Revit on two identical machines and it launched. Hardware Acceleration was enabled on both.

Autodesk suggests running Windows Update on the laptop to make sure all of the latest patches have been applied. The laptop is in Tahoe so when our remote user wakes up (he's on vacation) I'll ask him to run windows update and we'll see where we are.

Hello:

I have seen Revit fail to start like this before. I noticed it did it when I clicked on a Revit file (.rvt) in a directory or in one of the online forums to start the program. If I started the program with no file from the desktop icon it started correctly.
