Try this as an experiment. Import a 3d dwg file. Then create a section or elevation that is in front of the imported object, looking away from it.
I think you'll find that the 3d object clearly appears in your section or elevation, even though the 3d object is BEHIND the view range. In other words, the view range tools of sections and elevations don't appear to work on imported 3d dwg files.The models will show up in your view regardless. Sometimes this happens with in place families, too. This is a real bummer, because if that did not happen it would be much easier to use existing 3d models as Revit library elements...like cars, furniture, cabinets, etc., and have these populate your model. Now its just too much of a mess to use 3d non-solid imports for much of anything.
