I renamed a Revit file after I had created some dwf files from it.
I was very surprised to see that the dwf files somehow all renamed themselves to match the new Revit file name. How did they know?

Revit must be keeping up with that and changed them when you did the name change. If you did it from within Revit (name change), I can see it happening, but don't know for sure, but would be very odd from explorer unless Revit checks things like that when you open a project file. If you gave the DWF a new name rather than default, I don't see how it would know what to do as for the name change.
Have any witty co-workers playing with your files?

I don't have any coworkers, witty or otherwise.
Within Revit I did a "save as" to give the file a new name. Then I had two versions, the one with the new name and the one with the original name. The dwf files all changed themselves to the new name.
