Can Revit keep people from changing the settings or at least allow the IT manager to reset the defaults if someone starts playing with all the object settings?

Our IT guys would like to create templates based on our company project standards and not let someone change them becuase they don't like the lineweight or some other silly unproductive nonsense.

Place the templates on a network drive with read-only access. They can then open it to use as a template, but cannot save any changes to it.

As additional protection, we keep a copy of all of these types of files on a drive and folder that the user can't even see. In our case it is O:\CADD\Revit\Masters. That way we can replace any that might get changed as well as test new configurations without disrupting workflow.

Jim,

I do the exact same thing - with templates and libraries.

I think Steve may be talking about after the user starts a new project with a company template, and then stopping them from changing the styles while working in a project. Kind of like a running CAD Standards.

If this is correct then I'm not too sure, but i don't think you can. Were still waiting for our API so we can fix stuff like this. :D

I guess I must have a more superior mind than all you great minded folk.

Well Chad, if not greater, at least more color coordinated :D .

I agree, I think his question is more about "down the road" after the horse got out of the barn so to speak. Transfer Project Standards may help an admin/user reapply many of the settings that were altered, but it still involves "aggressive" intervention :D . Whippings and beatings shall continue until... :D

While I agree that it would be nice to have a stun gun come and zap the errant CAD user who draws on the wrong layer etc. the problem seems larger than just enforcing CAD standards. We have used the Autocad standards here for some time and no matter how tight we set them people bypass for various stupid reasons. It is always going to be an enforcement issue and requires simple supervision. IMHO Revit makes it easier due to lack of layers items built into families etc. But we still get people who draw some pretty wierd stuff before checking the library. I feel though I spend 20+ hours less enforcing CAD standards than I was under the all Autocad regime.

One thing to note, Autocad users who do not follow cad standards will be quickly flushed out when importing into Revit. The conversion is brutal if layer and color standards are not followed.

We have a saying in my small company. If my dad and I agree, we say... "Warped minds..."
