I am trying to create a splayed, arched opening in a 18" thick wall. Any suggestions?

try void blend then cut geometry.

I usually create a wall void along a path, then use the cut geometry tool on the void/wall
that creates the sweep.

Get into the elevation view that corresponds to your arch, or lay down a section that looks at it if it is obscured in elevation.
Under the modeling tab, pick Create.
It will prompt you to pick the type of in place family you want to create, pick Walls.
Give it a name.
Then pick Void Form/Void Sweep.
Select Pick Path
Then select Pick

Using the cursor, select one of the vert. legs of the path first, then around the arch, then the third leg.
Pick Finish Path.
You have to pick your path in sequence, so the sweep follows the path logically in a line.

Pick Sketch Profile:
Switch to plan view and sketch a triangle shaped negative void of the shape you want to remove at the point perpendicular to the first leg you picked (red dot/cross-hair).
Pick Finish Profile, then Finish Sweep.

You might be surprised to find your void has not cut anything yet...
You will see a ghosted orange shading of your swept profile:
You have to pick Cut Geometry from the menu bar, and pick your void, and then pick your wall,
and that will cut the sweep you just created. Then you can go on to another opening you want to sweep using the above, or just finish the family and you're done.

Go to 3-d or elev., and enjoy.
