I've had this problem for a while now, I think going back to the beginning of v7.0.
When a 3D view is changed to wireframe, it does a pretty shite job of displaying wireframe, see attached image.
I've played around with the video settings in Revit, but nothing improves the wireframe display.

Hmm, i've noticed this. It seems to occur when you have one surface pattern overlaying another... One option would be to turn of the surface patterns in the view....

You can create a view template that has all surface patterns turned off ( wall, floor roof and ceiling, etc ) and apply this to wire frame views.
Save it in your template of course.

So I've tried turning off the surface patterns for:
Ceilings
Floors
Roofs
Walls
but am still experiencing the problem.
To complicate the problem further, even if turning the surface patterns off did work, this particular project has a linked RVT file, and you don't get that kind of sub-object visibility control with linked files.
Hardware problem?
Have you tried opening the model on another machine in your office with a different (perhaps more powerful) video card or more memory?
As for some more model alternatives:
Try turning off the linked file.
Try turning off some worksets.
