Howdy, here is my scenario:
I have an old construction document with old blocks in it.
I have created all new updated blocks using the same names and want to update the blocks in the old dwg.
When I insert the new block, it ask do I want to redefine the block, then gives me this message:
Block WV references itself
Regenerating model.
*Invalid*
And it keeps the old block definition.
I know ways around this, but I'm going to be updating alot of dwgs and want to make autocad update the definitions.
Thanks in advance :)
It sounds like your new blocks have a block within itself with the same name. Either rename your block file or remove/rename the block within your block file.

Hi
Check out the following Technical Document on the Autodesk web site under the Knowledge Base section -
ID: TS66364 - Error inserting block: Block insertion failed. Inserted block <blockname> references itself. (http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/ps/item?id=2862068&linkID=2475323&siteID=123112)
Have a good one, Mike

Yeah I understand the part about renaming the blocks, I just dont want to :p . I know how to get around it, I just dont want to rename blocks 1000 times.
I was hoping there was a way to force the new definitions into the dwg. I have a block dwg with ALL the new blocks (about 50) I am going to need and thought it would be cool if I could just slam the block dwg in and miraculously fix everything. Going block by block is gonna suck :(
Goal of the exercise is to update a bunch of old blocks in a time efficient manner ;)
Thanks for the help so far though :D

Not really
"make sure the block drawings have been purged of any references of old blocks"
Purged and audited all dwgs involved, no change in results

Not reallyHi
Please post an example drawing file, plus an example "new" Block (drawing file), so we may take a look at your issue / problem first-hand.

Block WV references itself
Regenerating model.
*Invalid*
Here's the deal... You are trying to insert a block called WV. However, inside the block WV is another block called WV.
You simply cannot insert that block because AutoCAD doesn't know how to handle that. It's asking itself if WV is a group of entities or is WV a block of a group of entities?
Just open up WV, explode the block called WV, PURGE, and save it back down. Then if you reinsert the WV block, everything will be cool.
