Mouse and surface questions

Guys,

something when i Pan i get the regular hand symbol but sometimes I get a frustrating compass thing with arrows to move left, right, etc.
Anyone has an idea what is happening? It is completely random.

Second: You have a floor plan and want to change the surface in certain areas (let’s say tiles in the entry and kitchen, hardwood in living, carpet in bedrooms). What is the best way to do that?

1. Your mouse driver needs to exclude its special features for revit.exe - check the mouse's control panel. The Intellmouse control panel already excludes acad.exe by default

2. Some people are modelling up extra bits of floor for the finish; so they start with the structure as the main assembly and add on the finish on top. Others use the Split Surface tool and paint on the appearance they want in the locations they want. If I'm doing the work I choose the latter option.
