I was just wondering if Autodesk Revit is ever planning on using Autodesk vault with its program? The reason I ask is because I'm learning Autodesk Inventor and Autodesk 3D Studio Max and they both use Autodesk Vault and it seems pretty amazing. Just wondering if they are planning to because I was also looking into getting Buzzsaw into our firm but it seems that Vault covers the need for Buzzsaw, right? any time spent helping me out is greatly appreciated!

Also, why does it seem like I'm the only one questioning Autodesk's programs? I cant understand why they would own two different programs that serve basically the same purpose. like vault and buzzsaw? or Viz, Architectural Desktop and 3DS Max? or inventor and soon to be Alias? and those are just the programs i know about. Is it so they can compete with each other or what? either way it confuses me because it looks almost like they are questioning themselves on which programs better so they buy both-ha ha! I hope someone could let me know what they think-or know. and thanks again for any helping me with these questions i have. I cant wait to get them answered.

sincerely,

p.s.-along the lines of questioning Autodesk's decision of programs: why do they keep AutoCAD when they know what revit's capable of? you would think they would dump it as soon as possible, not bundle it up with Revit- just was wondering. :)

Autodesk seams to offer a cafateria menu of options. Something for everyone and you take as much as you're going to eat.

Vault looks interesting for Max, but it doesn't seam useful with Revit and it's worksets, how would you apply Vault to Revit?

Brian -

You need to keep in mind that AutoCAD is used for many industries, architecture being just one of them. I think there is still a need for basic drafting in this world and AutoCAD serves those that need to do just that very well.

As for questioning Autodesk, keep it coming. I understand some of their choices, but not all...

P.S. When are we going to see you at a SCRUG meeting?

i do think its great for autodesk to give you serious amounts of programs to have the option to learn. but i was just wondering the reasoning for owning two programs that offer the same results. You would think it would be almost better for the company to not spread itself so thin.

and to be honest i haven't gotten too involved in vault yet but it seemed to be the greatest project managing software. and it helped to organize and keep projects neat and efficient. I got the feeling buzzsaw did the same thing and was wondering why inventor and 3ds max would include vault in their programs but not Revit. wouldn't it help?

My understanding of Vault is only about a week old, as it shipped with Max8. It seams to me to support a multi file environment such as AutoCAD or Max where you have multiple people working on multiple files which all come together at some point or multiple points. In Max this tracking prevents two people from changing the same thing and organizes the hundreds of linked material, animation, IES, etc. files. In Revit, you only have one file. Sure you have family files, but once they're used they're embedded and tracked by the Revit file. Buzzsaw is a sharing solution for web sharing while Vault is more of an in-office database solution, I think.

great! thanks for the reply and i appreciate you taking the time to help me out-Autodesk Vault would really help us out a lot better since we are a small in-house firm of less than 25 people. -but i was wondering what you thought about Autodesk's decision to spread itself thin with seemingly duplicate programs? Do you really think the cost of having twice the support staff and programmers really worth the hassle? (i guess thats why these programs cost so much-ha ha! j/k)

thanks again for your insight,
Brian

I hate to rehash an old post (almost 5 years old), but since this is the only post I could find dealing with both Revit and Vault I thought I would ask here.

Has anyone seen the video for using Vault 2011 and Revit 2011? Has anyone used Vault with Revit yet?
