How would I get a railing post on every second stair?

This method will work for your stairs also.

After you build the stairs you can select the railing and edit, then just split the railing sketch line every second tread. Use the dim tool tool for precision spacing.

:D Logically, if you selected the place balluster on tread in the railing setup, you should be able to place 0.5 (every other tread), 0.25 (every fourth tread) etc. WELL, DON'T... :D :D . You'll promptly blow Revit up (fun facts to know and tell - Factory maybe a check value here?)..Anyway, Mike appears to have you setup. If you use stringers, and your ballusters are on the stringer, then you simply space the ballusters at 2x the tread depth. (Assuming you are talking treads, and not stair runs in your question.). Anyway, always fun to learn a new way to blow Revit up....
By the way, the ONLY thing in this project was a stair, I finally killed the process when it hit 680K. of memory used.....

Yeah, that's what I found too, anything less than 1 will crash Revit.
