View Full Version : Copy to clipboard with basepoint?

I hate to say I miss anything from ADT but I found the "copy with basepoint" a very useful command. Is there a way in Revit to precisely copy some selected items from one sheet or view to another? I've tried the paste align, but sometimes I can see the stuff I've pasted and other times I can't.

I was just thinking precisely the same about 4 minutes ago. I think this is one for the wishlist.

In Revit 6.0, there is a "Paste Same Place" tool, which will paste the copied geometry/notes/etc exactly where they were in the other view.

Edit>Copy to Clipboard
Edit>Paste Aligned>Same Place

From Help:

The Paste Align command allows you to copy multiple elements, such as walls, components, windows, on one level and paste them to another level exactly above or below where the original elements are located. This command is most useful for multi-story buildings, where you can copy and paste align elements from one level to many other levels.

Select the elements to be pasted.
From the Edit menu, choose Paste Aligned and then choose from the following:
Current View: pastes the copied elements to the current view. For example, you can paste elements from a plan view to a callout view. The view must be different from the view where the elements were copied.
Same Place: pastes the copied elements into the same place you copied them from. This is useful for pasting elements between worksets or design options. Also, you can use it to paste between two files that have shared coordinates.
Pick Level Graphics: pastes the copied elements in an elevation view. You must be in an elevation view to use this command as it requires you to select a level line on which to paste the elements.
Note: Do not pick levels using the Project Browser. See Using the Project Browser .

Select Levels by Name: If you copy all model elements, you can paste them into one or more levels. After you choose this command, a dialog box appears, and you choose the level(s) by name. To select more than one, hold CTRL while selecting the names.
Select Views by Name: If you copy view-specific elements (for example, dimensions) or model and view-specific elements, you can paste them into either floor plan and reflected ceiling plan views.

So maybe I'm not doing this correctly, but are you telling me that I can go to a sheet that has a detail on it. Activate the view, select the items I want to copy to another sheet (detail lines, notes, filled regions). Copy to clipboard, then go to the sheet I want to copy to, activate the view and paste aligned "same place" and the items will show up in that view?

When I do this I get an error that "View-specific elements can’t be pasted aligned with Same Place option. Try paste aligned using Current View or Select Views by Name options."

So I select paste align "current view" and nothing shows up?

I have tried to copy a drawing detail from one project file and then paste it into a new project file. I was not successful. Is this possible with Revit?
I do this alot with ADT.

I cut and paste between projects in Revit all the time. Are both projects within the same session of Revit? What type of detail is it? If it's a 2D drafting detail being copied from one drafting view to another, no problem. Copying modeled entities like groups, doors, windows, etc., no problem. If it's a new project, maybe you are trying to copy a callout of a Section into a project where no Section view has been created.

Ok, I need to figure out if Revit can do this and how to use the command. I need to do this all the time and it's a little frustrating trying to get it to work. I don't want a bunch of pasted items laying around that I can't see. This is as simple an example that I can think of.

I have two wall sections placed on a sheet and I would like to copy a filled region from section 1 to section 2. I activate section 1 view, select the filled region, deactivate section 1.

I then activate section 2 and paste from clipboard, but I can't find the filled region I just pasted. I turn on the crop region visibility and move the crop region boarder around looking for the pasted item but I can't find it.

What is really frustrating is that sometimes the pasted item is visible but other time it isn't. I've also tried the paste align options but I still can't find it. What am I doing wrong?

Perhaps a Group would work for this. I sometimes create filled regions to indicate foundation insulation, gravel, and earth fills. I then group them so that I can just drag them to each wall section as needed. You can ungroup and edit as needed.

Allen,
Thank you for the reply. This seemed to work for this example. I'm going to try grouping on some of the other details that I couldn't get to work. Thank you again for another option.

I then activate section 2 and paste from clipboard, but I can't find the filled region I just pasted.
When you paste in 6.1, the pasted elements are attached to the cursor until you click to define the initial placement. So, there won't be any problem finding them.

Way cool !! Looking forward to that.

This is exactly what I was hoping for. This program just keeps getting better and better!

Note that you need to paste from one drafting view to another(project to project) you cant just copy one viewport of a drafting view and paste it into another project. This would be too good.
