View Full Version : Is it possible to view a .jpg in 3D?

I have an aerial photo linked into my Revit project. I have also
drawn some masses to represent buildings.
Now I want to see both in a 3d view. After switching to 3d
the masses are visible but my aerial .jpg is not.
I've turned on everything I can think of. Tried orienting to a view
that I know I can see the jpg, but no luck.
Am I missing a setting? Suggestions or thoughts?

Images are view specific. You cannot actually import an image as a model element so its associated to a plane and shown in all views.
The only way this is slightly possible is with a render and using and image as a ground plane.

If you don't mind rendering the 3d view, you can use a decal attached to a null surface for the site and it will be visible in each view.

I'm not really familiar with any advanced rendering yet.
If set it up to render as suggested (I've done a few simple renderings)
will the rendering let the image come through or will I have
to define and render elements to reproduce the aerial photo?
And did this question make any sense at all?

sorry for ski, I sent in another reply before I saw your attached images.
That looks like it will do the trick!
I'll give it a try.
Thanks

I'm trying to create a null surface to attach the decal.
Is that simply a flat surface form site tools, with all settings
as default. No color or depth etc.?
Or do I need to do something to create a "null" surface.

Sorry, a null surface is bad terminalogy on my part. ANY surface will do. What you see is a generic extrusion (from Model -> Create ->Solid->Extrusion) I have assigned a "null material" - (ar2_library) so it does not render. Remember there are 2 materials defined for every Revit surface. One material you will see in the Revit graphics engine, the other material is required for the Accurender graphics engine. The decal will obscure the surface below, but if the surface and decal did not match in size then the surface below would show in the render. - thus the null material.
Place the decal on the horizontal surface while in the 3d mode and don't worry about the size of the decal. After placing the decal reselect the decal and resize it as you need to. Keep the lower left corner ( I think) of the decal on the applied surface when you scale it is the only requirement.
Heres the sample file posted. Probably won't print the site as I did not attach the jpeg.
