Linking OD & ED

I am fairly new to MAP & I am looking at attaching our existing GIS dbf's to an existing map(water stuff). Initially I planned on adding OD to all the valves, Watermains, Hyd etc. I now find I am not able to link my Object Data table to an external database. Apparently I can only generate links to block attributes, enclosed text etc.

I suppose I want to know if I am understanding this correctly & if you can't link to OD why not?

I can easily add block attributes to my valves & hyd but the pipes are a problem.

Look at the Setup->Convert Object Data to Database Links feature. There was an option added in 2006 that allowed you to link to a Db record. Requires a link template definition in the drawing though.
