We share our 3D RAMsteel models with fabricators by exporting the model to CIS/2 format and emailing it to them. This can reduce the schedule by several weeks. I would really like to see the ability to export a Revit Structure model to CIS/2 format. We currently use RAMsteel to export our 3D models to CIS/2, but the RAMsteel model isn't exactly correct due to limitations in RAMsteel's modeling abilities. If we could export the RS physical model (not the analysis model) it would be much more accurate, reducing mistakes and shop drawing checking time.

I would also like to see CIS/2 and SDNF files being able to be read directly into Revit.
We often get models from outside sources and the ability to import into Revit would automate the model production and take a lot of the drudgery out of reproducing a model which already exists in another format.
Please let me know your views on importing models into Revit from other sources.

We were one of the beta testers for this link. It's really pretty exciting. You can now export your physical model to CIS/2 which is more accurate than the analytical model. Actually, you have an option to export the physical model, the analytical model, or both. This link will save a lot of time as long as your physical model is accurate.
What I do is I use the link to export to CIS/2, then I use the "CIS/2 to VRML and IFC Translator" (http://cic.nist.gov/vrml/cis2.html) to create a VRML of the model. Then I use one of the VRML viewers like Cosmo, Octaga, Cortona, etc. (I use Cosmo http://www.karmanaut.com/cosmo/player/) to view the model. This gives me a pretty good idea of what the fabricator is going to receive.
Robobat and Autodesk should get high marks for creating this link. It really works well.

Do I have to own Robot in order for this link to work?
Thanks

Nope, the link works without owning Robot.
