View Full Version : Wall & Columns problem

Hi all,
I'd know what is (if any) the best way to achieve the situation as I called Project1. In few word I'd like to insert a column in a wall and get the result as show instead of what I normally have by Revit behavior as show by Project2.
Any ideas?
Regards.

There was a recent post that discussed this, but I couldn't find it. I seem to remember that there is a difference between the way "architectural" and "structural" columns interact with the wall. The architectural columns become part of the wall like you don't want, but the structural columns don't. So maybe you can try making your columns from a structural column template and that will keep the column separate.

..yep. That was one of my posts. No idea where it is, but if you find it you'll find the discussion pretty complete. That is the basic idea behind architectural column and structural columns. Only the finishes wrap around architectural columns - unless a wrapping finish is adjacent to the structural core material - , so by playing with what is inside the core you can get different wrapping conditions.

As Henry D's advice....
If you insert a system column family it will inherit the hosts characteristics. If you insert a structural item, i.e. one that exists as an rfa family it will not interact

Thanks to all for your kind answers... and, yes, I know what you say but with a structural column I'll get a result as show by Project3 that is better than nothing but is still not correct because I need a result as show by Project1 with the wide lines around the column&wall and not that come inside.
Also, I have to add that the way columns intersect with walls I think is away from reality: as shown by Project1 I have some layers inside the wall (as insulate and other) that I don't think this is the right way a column merges in a wall.
More, structural or not a column can have a proper material so Revit people should give us the opportunity to chose a material, isn't it?
I know it's a tiny problem but this is the way a like...

The only difference I see between these two is the thickness of some lines. Am I missing something?

No, you're right. Lines inside the wall shouldn't see.

This is the topic (www.zoogdesign.com/forums/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=886&highlight=column) that Aaronrumple referred to.

Try using "Join Geometry" to join the structural column and the wall. That should make the outline dark and the inside lines light.

Works! Great!
Finally, it would be nice if we have the chance to let the finish (if any) of the wall wrap around the column itself as in the reality happens (or is ask too much?)...
Thanks a lot.

To achieve material wrapping, add an architectural column in the same place as the structural column (as a column cover of sorts). It will join automatically with the wall and take on the materials of the wall (as mentioned above).

With a bit of practice architectural columns can be used to resolve a lot of complex architectural junctures that would require quite a bit of work with just walls....
