Subregions and dimensions

I have a site plan made of subregions: parking areas, drive ways, etc. and now I want to dimension their locations, but the diminsion tool does now see subregions like lines and walls. What is the proper procedure in adding dimensions to subregions?

My practice has been to draw these lines as detail lines first, then use the pick tool when I am actually sketching the subregions. Then I dimension to the detail lines.

Given that you are past this point, you might want to export the site as a .dwg, then import and explode it to get detail lines you can use for dimensioning purposes.
