We are using AutoCAD files from consultants and some interior files in our sections and elevations. There is one problem though; they are making extensive use of xclips in the AutoCAD files and Revit does not recognize them. Has anyone run into this? Do you have a solution? We would rather not use a "white out" filled region as there are a ton of these drawings.

You might want to ask Danny P or post in the Acad newsgroup for somesort of bind command that actually blocks out only what is visible in the dwg, but I know of no way to deal with this.

There's no way in AutoCAD to apply the xclip to permanently delete what's outside of the clip. It's merely hiding portions of the xref or block within the AutoCAD editor window. Funny though, I think you can do that with Microstation.

Brad, we all sit in the same cubicle. ;-)

You can print to a postscript file from AutoCAD, then convert to DXF/DWG using a program like Adobe Illustrator. This will get you there, though you sometimes loose layers.

Back in my AutoCAD days i used this trick a lot for graphics presentations... I think (If I remember correctly, back in R12/R13) if you export w/ EPSOUT from AutoCAD you preserve layers.

...Brad, we all sit in the same cubicle. ;-)Wow, that's big cubicle! You referring to the planet? Otherwise who's system did you get the walls from Steelcase's "National" systems? Honolulu>Newport Beach>Orlando...that's a big wall system!

I thought that binding the xref's would do it...but apparently not...

Jim,
Do you still require the link after it's inserted?...I know this is only a suggestion to try for a workaround (I currently am without a Revit liscence on my computer....drat-it-all) but have you tried copying that part you want to the clipboard and pasting into a drafting detail view? Would that work...I can't tell yet.

Maybe even print to PDF then use one of those sneaky programs that convert PDF back to DWG. I guess loosing layers is the only drawback.

Hey now... let's keep this clean.. stop bragging about the size of your cubicles...

Jim -
I know this is a pain and kind of sidesteps the coordination of the link, but if this is a big problem, couldn't you write a script to automatically load the consultants drawing in a new file, select all, convert it to Revit linework (generically), make it a Revit group - then load that .rvg drawing and use the crop regions to reduce the amount of information? OR I guess you're stuck with making smaller drawings out of the larger drawings. I'm not sure if you've got a lot of data, how otherwise to get around this if Revit doesn't support these commands/options.

Just a thought...

darn... I have the xclip problem too. seems no easy way to make it work... I have to go back to explode those blocks in CAD and trim them...... :(
