I thought I'd post this here before I submitted a wish and made Brenda have to read another one and search her list to see if it's already there.

I found the revalation of "deactivating" the F1 key finally! All thanks go to Lynn Allen and her BLOG here: http://lynn.blogs.com/lynn_allens_blog/2005/10/index.html (will have to scroll down about halfway)

That stopped some :banghead: and made some :D !

However, thanks to those programmers and technicians at AutoDesk, they have foiled that plan with their new spiffy CUI file system in 2006 (which is pretty darn cool if I do say so myself!). So onto the purpose of the post!

Has anyone figured out a way to deactivate the F1 key in AutoCAD 2006? I tried to fool around with the CUI file to no avail and the CUI interface doesn't seem to be able to do it either, but I haven't been using very long so I'm still digging into the world of CUI.

All in all, if we can't do it yet, I want a wish to be able to toggle the F1 key to either ^C^C or "HELP" (or make it completely useless!)

Hi

Please note I have *moved* this thread from the AutoCAD Customization (http://forums.augi.com/forumdisplay.php?f=118) forum to this one as I feel this particular Forum is a more appropriate place for such a topic.

Thanks, Mike

Hi

Take a look at the following...

The Best AutoCAD Hip Tip Ever! - AutoCAD Hip Tip: Changing the F1 key to Cancel (http://lynn.blogs.com/lynn_allens_blog/2005/10/the_best_autoca.html) by Lynn Allen

Today I'll address the issue in AutoCAD 2006 - tomorrow I'll address the issue in AutoCAD 2005 or before (so stay tuned).
Have a good one, Mike

You can reassign the shortcut keys. See attached.

Thanks Mike. Must have missed that one in her BLOG.

I followed the steps to Lynn Allen's blog and now F1 does not display the help menu but I get a windows error message that reads:

"The C:\Program Files\AutoCAD 2006\help\acad162.chm file is not a windows help file, or the file is corrupted."

The error message goes away when you click cancel and I am free to hit F1 all I want for the remainder of the session. I just get the message every time I hit F1 for the first time when I open a new AutoCAD session.

This problem goes away once you delete the shortcut key that the blog tells you to create, but you are stuck with F1 displaying the help box again.

Is anybody else getting this effect?

It do it as soon as I changed the CUI, but I remapped the Help file and it stopped. You can assign F1 to something, but you can't unassign it anywhere from being "help." But I just tried it and it still pulls up help when it's assigned to ^C Cancel. I just redid it to ^C^C Cancel and it now it works. However, as soon as restart AutoCAD it goes back to the error message again.

Maybe Mike can lend some answers.

Since Mike is at AU, you'll have to settle for my response instead.

Have you reassigned te help command? I mapped it to CTRL+SHIFT+F1. I do not get any error message, and F1 is now cancel.

ScottI wish I was at AU... Maybe next year.

Where is the default F1 Help defined in the CUI? I've looked nearly everywhere and can't find it.

Just get it from the command list in the lower left of the CUI, drag it to
shortcut Keys in the upper left, and re-assign.

Do you save your workspace settings before exit?

Do you save your workspace settings before exit?Yeah, but it only brings up the error the first time in a session when I hit F1. After that, it works as cancel.

I have Map 3d 2006. When I look up help in the CUI, I see 3 entries, 2 called help, and a third called help\tF1. (Express also has a help command). I make sure help\tF1 has no shortcut key assigned, and re-mapped one of the other 2 help commands.

Not sure if you see the same in vanilla 2006, but check which help command you have mapped to a shortcut.

ScottI'm using straight up AutoCAD 2006 and the only help commands I see are the Help\tF1 and the express Help. What I don't see is any help commands already assigned to F1.
