View Full Version : Void Family for slab Recess

I am trying to create a parametric void family to be used as a sloped slab recess at ground floor balconies.
I created the void as a floor hosted sweep family and have it flexing as required but when I insert it into a project I can't get it to cut the floor geometry. I have tried floors objects and in-place-families created as floor slabs. Still no luck.
Anyything I'm missing? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I've found that I too can't bring in a void "family" and get it to cut the geometry. The only solution for me was to model in-place .

Not much help but at least you're not alone.

Maybe the technical people at Revit can shed some light.

There is a known problem when voids are nested in families ( I think its still a problem in 6.1, but haven't checked ).

Nested voids will cut only in the family they are inserted into. They will not cut anything when that family is inserted in a model.

I know the void family family you are using is probably not nested, but I thought I'd mention this other behavior, as it may have some relevance to the problem.

I have a family for just that reason and it works very well. If I find it at the office and think of it tomorrow I will post it.

Dimitri -

Make sure that you "cut" the void from the piece of floor that you have in the family template. It's not enough to simply model the void. Another thing you'll want to be sure of is that the face of the void (or the line representing the face when you edit the sweep) is aligned and locked to the face of same piece of floor.

OK forget that, I created a very simple one, the only parameter is the depth at this point and it is a square cut but the principal is the same.

i had a similar problem
i draw a double mansonary wall and a floor
i want to cut a litle depression in the floor between the 2 mansonary walls
something like a "u" shape , first i try a in place floor family drawing a void...when rendering i get a small strip of a diferente materia, but no depression
second i creat a in place floor of one extrusion (the floor) and a sweep (the depression) nothing happen again, any help?

Thanks one and all.
Phil, worked like a charm. I had tried to 'join geometry' in the family template but didn't do the 'cut' thing.... so near, yet so far.
Just for reference, it seems to work fine in 6.1 without having to modify the family template as Phil noted. Once again, the Revit Development team anticipating our every need.
