Non-selectable object categories

Is it possible to lock an entire object category (as well as sub-categories) so that it is not subject to selection on the screen? Specifically, I would like to be able to lock surface patterns on an elevation, or ceiling, or floor so that it is visible for reference, but not constantly highlighting when I move the cursor across the screen. I know the introduction of the "Press + Drag" option alleviates the problem of accidentally moving an object, but the constant highlighting is a nuisance when there is a lot of information on the screen.

Worksets would allow you to control what is highlighted. If you haven't used these before, I would suggest the tutorial and on-line training. Even if you're just a small or one-person operation, worksets are great for controlling object visibility as well as refresh rates.
