"In-Place" Family use

What are the rules for "In-place" families? I thought I remember reading somewhere you are not suppose to copy them but I can't find it anymore. Is it ok to use them a lot and has anyone had issues with them?

You can copy them, but they are unique instances and will lose their references. With there references lost they can be tricky to edit.

Better to group it and then copy it. this way if you edit one - the others update.

They do take up memory and are more time consuming to edit and manage - so best to use other tools when possible.
