View Full Version : Roof with sloped ridge

I am trying to model a weird roof. The walls are not orthogonal and the ridge is sloped. This means that the bearing height changes. I need this roof to join and meet cleanly with another roof. I have been able to "rough" model what I want but the model lacks the clean precision that I need.

I have tried searching the help file, but it seams somewhat anemic in explaining this type of complex modeling. Can anyone help or point me to some advanced roofing tutorials?

Attached are some screen shots of the rough model.

Roof by face should do it

Thanks for the reply.

The problem is that I don't have a mass with which to select the face of. In order to properly model the mass to create the proper roof I would need to know the exact dimensions and locations for valleys and ridges. Am I missing something? Is there an easier way to approach this? Could this entire roof be modeled as on roof ?

You would use a blend mass, draw the shape on the left side of the building in elevation, then the right. stretch the mass the length of the building(offset for any overhang you may want. then roof by face.

I think I would need a Swept Blend to accomplish what you are talking about. Or at least a more sophisticated sweep tool like a loft in Max and Viz or "Follow me" Sketch Up.Here is a diagram which might help clarify what I am trying to do.

Why not draw a normal roof base on the lowest side, then cut back using the cut/opening tool to the wall ...see attached

Scott described the process well...a blend (two in this case) will give you the form you need. I've attached an example and a screen capture.

Is this what you want ?
You can do it using the slope arrows.

Let me start by thanking you all for your help.

The problem I am having with the blend method is that the end shape (TOP) must be the same angle as the beginning shape (BASE). Is this correct? I could achieve the proper end angle by cutting the mass with a void but then I would have to find a way to figure out the proper sketch dimensions so that when the mass is cut it would meet up cleanly. Does that make any sense?

The problem I have had with the slope arrow method is that there is a lot of guess work and trial and error involved in order to achieve the sloping ridge. Model posted by gravelin has the sloped ridge sloping the wrong direction. Every time I try to make it slope the other way I get an error message.

Any additional help would be greatly appreciated.

I am sure there is some way to do this Revit, but I have not figured it out yet any suggestions? Or should I just model it in Max or sketch up and import it.

This took about 10-15 mins using Sketch Up. I know there must be an easy way to do somthing so simple in Revit. Can anyone explain how?
