That is the page I have, but it says the file is over 83 Megs. That's pretty big for an upgrade isn't it?

It's not an upgrade file, it's the full build.

When you say full build do you mean the same thing as on the CD I have with the fixes? In which case I only need the newest build. Or will it just overwright my existing version of Revit and update with the new builds?

The file on the download site will install the latest version of Revit Building 8.1.

new builds are basically new releases, the cd is old and outdated at this point. They are different from "service pacs or patches" They are full installs(without the content(families).

so would that make the build RB8.2 then? the lastest version of revit would be the new build?

so would that make the build RB8.2 then? the lastest version of revit would be the new build?Nope, that would be a new point release!

The latest build is Revit Building 8.1 Build Number: 20051214_2200
(You can decode that as a build that is dated 2005/12/14)

New builds in the same point release are forward and backward compatible. This is not so between point releases which are not backward compatible.

So, new builds don't give new features, just fix existing problems.

that is kind of why i asked if a build was like a service pack. i was really not sure on the terminology of "build"

Usually just fixes, but sometimes an improvement to an existing feature slips in I think. Mostly those are saved for point releases and major releases (6.0, 7.0, 8.0, etc.)

Service packs and new builds generally accomplish the same thing - fix bugs. But the packaging is different. Service packs usually apply fixes by replacing only affected files - you can't install an application from a service pack, only update it. A "build" is the application itself - however builds of Revit do not include auxiliary files like families, templates, textures, etc. - only the application.

The term "build" comes from compiling or "building" the application's source code into a binary that the OS can run. Any application that has been compiled from source code can be referred to as a "build" - a build number usually accompanies the build to identify when or what version of the source code the application was compiled from.
