Surface Pattern Issues

I have a roof with a surface pattern setup to represent a shingle. Works great until a I get to a curved piece of a of roof, and the pattern does not show. If the roof is segmented it is fine, but if I modify it to be have zero segments and be a curve I loose the pattern.

Is this just how it work, or does anybody have any work arounds?

Normal. And I believe it is on the wishlist to hopefully be fixed.
