View Full Version : brick showing above sloped sill

When I insert a sill with a sloping top as a wall sweep at the bottom of a window, a little bit of brick shows above the sloping top of the sill.

How can I eliminate this?

Can I create some invisible part of the sill profile that would eliminate the brick?

Thanks.

You're using a what?

Generic model? Make a void first that cuts the wall..... Then add the solid.

Aaron,

Thanks for your reply.

For the sill I am using a wall sweep with a hosted profile I created.

What is the best way to create the void, a wall reveal?

Build it into the window family.

Scott,

The window is a storefront curtain wall.

So, I don't think your suggestion would work here.

Thanks.

As an example, put this brick sill in your window family as a component. It is a simple sweep with a void sweep to match it and cut the wall. This is the route you need to take. (You can use the family straight into the project under curtain walls).

Sorry, since you said window, I assumed window. So then for a curtain wall you would make a generic model wall based family, with a void that cuts the depth of the brick, then create a solid to fill in your sill.

OK, I am attempting to create a sill family following the example of Skisouth.

For some reason I am unable to constrain the top of the sill parts to the height reference plane.

Can anyone help me with this?

Thanks.

While sketching the sweeps path, you have to associate the sweeps path to the Ref. Plane of your Sill Height.
Or
choose Edit Work Plane of an existing sweep (that's what I did with the void you already created)

Eddy,

You seem to have fixed it. Thank you very much.

I had a lot of trouble when I did the original sweeps. They weren't oriented properly. I had to rotate, mirror and move them. This probably disrupted the path that I original locked to the reference plane.

I still don't know how to control the orientation of the profile when I do the sweep.

Thank you again.

Now that I am trying to use the sill I find some new problems.

I can't set the instance parameters until after I place the sill into a wall. The height parameter doesn't do anything.

The material parameter also doesn't work.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Does anyone have any suggestions regarding the instance parameter and material issues above?

Thanks.

The instance parameter can only be adjusted after placement. Just the way it works. Knowing that - make sure the value you use when closing the family is set to a reasonable value (like 3' for a sill). This will be the default value on insertion.

The height parameter is related to the ref. plane in the family identified as the origin. I'd need to show you a couple of examples as it is rather subtle and doesn't always do what you think. But I'm at my wife's laptop - so no Revit.

I typically recommend just making a material parameter and leaving it set to <By Category> inside the family. You can change it once loaded to best suit the project.

Aaron,

Thank you very much for your reply.

I am not sure why, but the material thing is working ok now.

It is probably more convenient to leave the height parameter not working. The sill seems to go at the proper height when I place it in an elevation.
